Near China Camp (Tuolumne County, California, US)notes The Mariposa Slate formation is composed of marine sediments that have been metamorphosed by volcanic activity during Jurassic time. The Mariposa Slate is one of the principal units in the Foothills Metamorphic Belt and is the host rock for much of the famous gold-producing California Mother Lode. Many of the gold mines along the Mother Lode zone were cut into the Mariposa Slate to follow gold-bearing veins of quartz intruded by volcanic activity.keywords: Jurassic Mesozoic metamorpic metamorphism petrology Sierra geology
