note the fruit of Morus is described in the Jepson as: multiple of achenes within fleshy calyces on inflorescence receptacle, ± like a blackberry. Alnus fruits are described as: many, in cone-like catkin, bracts 3 mm, woody, winged.
Also, the descriptions of leaves seem to fit Morus much better. Morus alba is described as follows: Leaf: petiole 5–25 mm; blade 8–20 cm, ovate-cordate, coarsely toothed, glabrous or lower surface hairy on major veins, major lobes generally 0–3, sometimes only on 1 side, generally < halfway to midrib. Alnus rhombifolia is described as follows: Leaf: blade thick, base tapered to round, tip round to acute, margin generally ± flat, upper surface green, midrib and major veins not indented, lower surface yellow-green. The leaves shown in the picture look pretty clearly cordate, with a base that is neither rounded nor tapered." |
