location
Ansel Adams Wilderness Area. Inyo National Forest (Mono County, California, US)notes At 13,157 ft., Mount Ritter is the highest in the Ritter Range. It is an example of a glacial horn, a single sharp peak that remains after glaciers have carved away its flanks. This part of the Sierra was subjected to extensive glaciation, but Mt. Ritter remained above the ice. As a result, it does not exhibit the rounded features characteristic of glaciated peaks. The volcanic ridge in the foreground, however, was overridden by the ice and displays the typical rounding.keywords: glacier, glaciation, horn, geomorphology, Sierra, peak, earth science
