  • notes   The Great Unconformity is a vast geological feature extending across several states in the Southwest. It is the evidence of an ancient land surface created by more than a billion years of erosion. The deeply folded quartzite and slate of the precambrian Uncompahgre Formation, seen in the lower half of this photo, was formed about 1.6 billion years ago and was subsequently worn down to a relatively flat plain. About 375 million years ago, the plain was flooded by shallow seas that created the sandstone and shale deposits of the Elbert Formation, now resting horizontally atop the Uncompahgre Formation. The contact between these two units represents a gap of about 1.2 billion years in earth history.
