location
Obsidian Dome. Inyo National Forest (Mono County, California, US)notes This volcanic vent is one of several in the Eastern Sierra that erupted during a period of increased activity about 600 years ago. It extruded a viscous mass of obsidian (black volcanic glass) that rises about 300 feet above the surrounding terrain. Because of its extreme viscosity, the obsidian piles up in these mounds or domes rather than flowing horizontally. As the mass cooled, the surfaced cracked into large angular blocks, forming piles of talus on the top and sides of the dome.keywords: eruption, Holocene, Sierra, volcanic vent, volcanism, volcano, geomorphology
