Near Little Lake (Inyo County, California, US)family
Asteraceae
notes Habitat of Glyptopleura marginata (the small prostrate plants with pale yellow-white flowers). [NOTE: Due to the ligule length, the plants in this population key to Glyptopleura setulosa in the Flora of North America treatment, though the Jepson Manual (1993) only recognized the single taxon G. marginata.] The plants here were growing in coarsely sandy soil, apparently derived from a mixture of Sierran alluvium and local volcanic material. These were well behaved sunflowers: their heads tracked the trajectory of the morning sun as it moved through the sky...looking like a loose array of miniature radio telescopes. For those who may be curious, the bright yellow flowers in this scene are Coreopsis californica. The light purple flowers are on (relatively depauperate) Salvia carduacea plants. camera Shot on a Canon Digital Rebel XT at f16, 1/60, ISO 100 with a Canon 50mm compact macro lens.

| Reviewer's comments: | | | "The second edition of the Jepson Manual now recognizes both Glyptopleura setulosa and G. marginata as distinct species, in accord with the FNA treatment. So, per the remarks in the post, this is being moved to G. setulosa." |
