  • family Fabaceae
  • notes   Habit and habitat of a flowering specimen. There was no fruit, so I wasn't able to unequivocally separate P. arborescens from P. fremontii while keying this specimen in the field. Later, while pursuing this issue, I came upon an interesting article in Madrono (Vol. 52, No. 4, 2005, pp 258-261) by Dana York and J. Adams. They found that examining the glands on the fruit is crucial for distinguishing P. fremontii from P. arborescens, and that it's unlikely that P. fremontii occurs in California beyond a population in the Grapevine Mountains in Death Valley NP, very near Nevada. So, I'm going with P. arborescens here, and with var. minutifolius, since the calyces are only sparsely hairy (as opposed to conspicuously so...as seen in the CalPhotos posts of P. a. var. arborescens by Michelle Cloud-Hughes, for instance: http://calphotos.berkeley.edu/cgi/img_query?query_src=ucjeps&enlarge=0000+0000+0905+0802
