Growing on a rocky slope next to road at ~5400' elevation in the northeast San Gabriel Mnts with Phacelia longipes, Linanthus concinnus, and many other herbaceous species, as well as Fremontodendron, Hesperoyucca, Quercus chrysolepis, and Pinus monophyllus.

This keyed in Jepson fairly unambiguously to Camissonia confusa. And the description there fits the plant fairly well too (the plants stems *are* 'grayish' near their bases).

Nevertheless, I'm wary when IDing unfamiliar Camissonia species, and there are three species ''nearby'' in the key, whose descriptions are also largely compatible with the plant in the photo, and with which I'm unfamiliar: C. ignota, C. intermedia, and C. hirtella. These three species also occur in the general region and appear on the thorough and expertly well-documented plant list for the area at: http://www.glendoranaturalhistory.com/East_San_Gabriel_Plants.html.

But if elevational ranges in the Jepson manual can be depended on here, then both C. intermedia (< 2625') and C. ignota (<3600') are eliminated. The remaining species, C. hirtella, is supposed to have ovate leaves---which doesn't fit this plant. Also, I found this scanned image of an herbarium specimen for C. confusa from the Oregon State University Herbarium. It looks passably similar (though the fruit was mostly less coiled). So C. confusa is my best shot here.
