notes Inflorescence of a staminate (male) plant of Eriogonum incanum. For the flower lower right of center in the image, the fertile (pollen-producing) anthers are labeled in three groups of 3 by small ''a's''. No vestigial pistils are visible in this image. The vast majority of Eriogonum species are synoecious, meaning that each of the flowers of a typical plant have both fertile stamens and fertile pistils. The typical Eriogonum flower has 9 functional stamens and a single functional pistil with three styles topped by small ball-like stigmas. However E. incanum is one of three unusual species in the genus in that it is dioecious---meaning it has staminate (male) flowers and pistillate (female) flowers residing on different plants. Dioecy is manifested here by staminate plants having flowers without fertile ovaries.camera Shot on a Canon Digital Rebel XT at f14, 1/125, ISO 200, using a Canon 50mm Compact macro lens.
