INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Jul 27, 2006
  • location   Near Tomahawk Lake, Humphries Basin, Sierra National Forest (Fresno County, California, US)
  • family Polygonaceae
  • notes   Inflorescence of a pistillate (female) plant of Eriogonum incanum. The (fertile) ovaries here are topped by 3 mildly diverging styles, each tipped with a tiny ball-like stigma. These are labeled by an 's' for a number of flowers in the image (the flower at lowest left in the image most clearly shows the fertile pistil, styles, and stigmas). For the flower at the lower center of the image, the infertile (pollen-less) anthers are labeled in groups of three by a small 'a'. The vast majority of Eriogonum species are synoecious, meaning that each of the flowers of a typical plant have both fertile stamens and fertile pistils. The typical Eriogonum flower has 9 functional stamens and a single functional pistil with 3 styles topped by small ball-like stigmas. However E. incanum is one of three unusual species in the genus in that it is dioecious---meaning it has staminate (male) flowers and pistillate (female) flowers residing on separate plants. Dioecy is manifested here by pistillate plants having flowers with vestigial (infertile) anthers.
