location
Fault Trail. Los Trancos Open Space Preserve (Santa Clara County, California, US)notes This oak tree, with its trunk growing parallel to the ground, was probably knocked down by shaking during the 1906 earthquake along the San Andreas Fault. The trace of the primary surface rupture lies along the flatter area -- the side hill bench -- at the left edge of this view. Tree-ring data from the trunk and branches established the general time of the damage. Other trees in this area show similar unusual growth patterns. Note the tree in the upper right corner of this view.keywords: fault, displacement, san andreas, tectonics, earthquake, fracture, earth science
