notes ID courtesy Steve Edwards, Ph.D, dir. East Bay Regional Parks (Tilden) Botanic Garden. A very low, mat-forming ground cover; inconspicuous, easily overlooked. This population was discovered by botanist Roman Gankin. In pers. com., September 2008, he recalled: 'As I was poking around a streamside, I noted a plant that I had never seen before tucked neatly at the edge of the stream amidst grasses and sedges. No flowers or fruit, I was mystified. I took the plant to Tom Howell at Cal Acad, knowing he had been collaborating with George Gillette on a checklist of the plants of Lassen Park. Tom knew immediately what I had found and expounded on the fact that this Gaultheria was a disjunct by some distance from other known populations.'camera Sony DSLR A700, 2.8/100mm macro lens
