habitat live oak/chaparralnotes ~5mm total length. According to Borror & DeLong's Introduction to the Study of Insects: 'Some species of Hilara & Empis that occur in the Northwest construct balloons, which they carry about as a means of attracting females. These balloons can be made of silk (spun from the basal segment of the front tarsi) or of a frothy material from the anus, & they usually contain prey.' cf. Empis sp. I omitted the cf. from the taxon field so that the photo can be found by searching on the scientific name.camera Nikon D200, 200mm f/4 AF Micro Nikkor
