INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Jul 15, 2006
  • location   E fenceline, 20 m downslope (N) of lip of Santa Rita Mesa, La Purisima Mission State Historic Park, Lompoc. (Santa Barbara County, California, US)
  • family Poaceae
  • notes   These three isolated clumps are still present in July 2008. I'm happy to report finding (at long last) a second locality on the park - a nice trailside patch 10 to 20 m S of the big wooden Cross that overlooks the historic area. Some anthers are easily 1 mm long as per Jepson, but some a bit shorter. Leaf sheaths are pubescent but not really tomentose, which Jepson says they should be. Lower inflorescence branches are at right angles to the stem in some cases, contrary to Jepson. And some plants are under 30 cm. However, these plants appear to be the same species called Agrostis hooveri at the nearby Burton Mesa Ecological Reserve (by Condor Environmental, I believe.) Also, they may be morphologically a bit odd for hooveri, but they'd would be downright aberrant for any other species, I think. I'll post better photos soon.
