notes This entity is phantasmagorically multifarious on Burton Mesa and Purisima Hills. Solomon Hills too, where I saw an 'obvious' scrub oak sprouting a few agrifolia leaves. It's as if there were a complex hybrid swarm in the region, with just a few trees managing to distinguish themselves as another species (Q. parvula.) There is no standard type, having uncommon variants... no, quite frequently you can see disparately leaved oaks from wherever you happen to be standing. A whole tree will have leaves of a given sort, and the one next to it will likewise be uniformly leaved but with leaves that are drastically different from its neighbor's. Pubescence varies too. Some immatures with glabrous, spiky leaves could be misidentified as Q. palmeri by a casual visitor. By the way, the big-leaved tree whose leaves are pictured had 26 trunks of diameters up to 4 inches, contributing to a domed canopy perhaps 12 feet tall.photo category: Plant - tree
