Mason County, Washington, USfamily
Melanthiaceae
plant community red cedar, Douglas firnotes Photographed in my yard where the ants perform myrmecochory (seed dispersal) on the various trillium, dicentra and asarum species. Note the fleshy eliasome attached to the seed that attracts the ants to the tasty morsel. Ant ID: I don't know which ants typically disperse these seeds; haven't seen it myself. But I can tell you that the ants in the picture look like Lasius pallitarsus, the most abundant ant in wet forest habitats west of the Cascades. John T.
