"The place name reference "San Pedro Mountain" is somewhat puzzling here for a photo taken in 1994 and submitted in 1999.
I grew up in LA and have been especially fascinated by mountains and their place names most my life, studying and learning all the local topography wherever I've lived...and I've never heard of a "San Pedro Mountain" in Los Angeles County. A careful internet search on that place name brought up only this archaic reference from 1900 referring the high point of the Palos Verdes Peninsula...which has been known as "San Pedro Hill" since at least 1964 (see the USGS topo published at that date).
But the Timema above appear to be perched on manzanita leaves, and to the best of my knowledge, there are no natural populations of Arctostaphylos on the Palos Verdes peninsula. (This CalFlora search results page supports that notion.)
An unusual number of data errors have been found among the Cal Academy of Sciences Timema posts here, and I wonder in the location info here is another instance of this?" |
