  • date of photo  Nov 5, 2007
  • location   Red Rock Canyon State Park (Kern County, California, US)
  • family Chenopodiaceae
  • notes   Like most shrubby Atriplex, this species is dioecious. Taken late in a dry year, a dried out twig of flower clusters on a male plant appear here. You can see three anthers (or perhaps that's just their crisped remains!) and some scurfy fascicles of small leaves that emanated from buds in the older leaf axils. Older leaves are longer and more oblong-elliptic than the more or less ovate fascicled bud leaves.
  • camera   Shot using a Canon Digital Rebel XT at f9, 1/400, ISO 100 using a Canon 100mm macro lens.
  • photo category: Plant - shrub
