Half Moon Bay (San Mateo County, California, US)notes The 'green flash' is an elusive atmospheric phenomenon that can be seen under certain conditions at the precise moment that the sun dips below the horizon. The effect is caused by the refraction of light through the atmosphere. There are several types of green flashes. This photo shows a mock-mirage flash caused by passage of light through an inversion layer. In this image, a second disk, or 'floater,' appears to pinch off from the full solar disk.camera Canon 20D, 700mm, f/7.1, 1/1250 sec.
