  • notes   They hatched on July 4th with bare pink skin with slight pin hairs. They were covered in dark down a couple days later. My friend, Bill Boehm professional photographer, spent a few hours capturing the feeding process via HD video. We observed that the male bird would feed the nestlings first, then the female. They brought grubs and moths to the nest, and took away in their beaks the babies' fecal material (what a way to change diapers). It was interesting to note that the male hovered over the nest before landing. I mimicked the parents chik, chik call and noticed the four little ones open their mouths for food in synchronized unison. After it was all said and done, mom came back for a nest rest and snuggle for the night.
