notes Soliva sessilis is one of those composites which keys out under the 'disciform' group in the Jepson Manual. The flower heads occur in leaf axils and are sessile. One is seen here near the center of the image. I teased it open a bit so the achenes of the outer series of pistillate flowers would be more visible. One such achene is exposed and laid flat to the right and below the head (this didn't occur naturally...I set it up). These achenes are winged, and the tips of the achenes and wings are tapered to hard spines. The inner disc flowers (5 here) are staminate and their corollas have 4 lobes (rather than the usual 5 in Asteraceae). The outer pistillate series of flowers have no corollas. Note the tiny spiny tips on the leaflets. The leaves of this plant are fairly distinctive and easy to recognize once you get to know it. Also, if after sitting down you place your hand on this plant while pushing yourself up, you're likely to get a sharp stab from those achene spines. And achenes will probably be stuck into your clothing, pack, etc...which provides for effective dispersal. Unfortunately, this is a weedy alien originating in South America.camera Shot on a Canon Digital Rebel XT at f16, 1/4 sec, ISO 400, using a Canon 100mm macro lens.
