habitat Forest, fieldsnotes Yawning after eating. 4 rows of teeth are visible on the top jaw and 2 are on the bottom jaw. The glottis (airway) is the opening on the lower jaw, which fits perfectly into a cavity on the upper jaw when the mouth is closed. That cavity contains a passage to the nostrils, so snakes breathe through their nose. Also, the two ducts at the front of the upper jaw lead to the Jacobson's organ, which are used by the two tips of the tongue. In this photo, the tongue is retracted, but its location is in front of the glottis.camera Canon
