INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Jun 5, 2006
  • location   Moss Beach (San Mateo County, California, US)
  • family Polemoniaceae
  • synonyms Linanthus croceus
  • plant community   Coastal Bluff Prarie
  • notes   Mid-scale habitat shot of Leptosiphon croceus (formerly Linanthus croceus). This is a rare and endangered plant (CNPS List 1B). This population's habitat appears to be under encroachment pressure from three agressive alien weeds: Hottentot Fig (Carpobrotus chilensis), Rough Cat's Ear (Hypochaeris radicata), and Cut-Leaf Plaintain (Plantago coronopus). Hottentot Fig (often called 'iceplant') forms large, dense smothering mounds of vegetation. Hypochaeris plants form a flat basal rosette of leaves which tightly plaster the ground and prevent other plants from growing up through them. The plantain also crowds out other plants. Carpobrotus was introduced from South Africa. The Hypochaeris and Plantago were introduced from Europe.
