notes Detail of a flowering head of Adenocaulon bicolor. This species has 'disciform' heads, with staminate disk flowers in the center surrounded by an outer whorl of pistillate flowers. In this image, the disk flowers are in full anthesis, while the outer pistillate flowers are past anthesis...their corollas have already withered and dropped and the relatively large black-gland-tipped achenes (fruits) are maturing.camera Shot at f16, 1/200, ISO 100, w/ flash on a Canon Digital Rebel XT w/ a Canon 100mm macro lens.
