notes Two upper stems of A. filagineus, focused on the inflorescenses. These composites have 'disciform' inflorescences, which are very different from the radiate or discoid heads found more commonly in the Asteraceae. What appear to be five spine-tipped phyllaries, are actually considered to be an inner whorl of highy modified chaff scales which subtend the disc flowers. Outside of this inner whorl of disc-flower chaff scales is another whorl of less conspicuous chaff scales which enclose the outer pistillate flowers of the head.camera Shot on a Canon Digital Rebel XT at f8, 1/200, ISO 100, with a Canon 100mm macro lens.
