    Habit shot of Systenotheca vortriedei from an oblique angle. The whole plant is roughly 10 cm across. This is a rare endemic of the Santa Lucia Mountains in Monterey and San Luis Obispo counties.

    The genus Systenotheca consists of this single species (previously lumped into Chorizanthe). It's a fascinating plant. Each involucre consists of two flowers: the lower, longer (fully opened) flower is pistillate; the upper, shorter flower is bisexual. For more info see James Reveal's Systenotheca webpage.
