  • date of photo  Mar 26, 2006
  • location   San Bruno Mountain (San Mateo County, California, US)
  • family Ericaceae
  • notes   Detail of terminal branchlet and inflorescence of A. imbricata. This species is a low, sprawling, shrub with tightly spaced, clasping leaves, arranged in a highly regular spiral pattern. The plants typically grow in large, crowded colonies of many individuals which hug rocky slopes, dominating tens to hundreds of square feet and excluding most other plants, save relatively small herbs which can grow up through its dense stems and leaves. This species is a very narrowly distributed endemic...the entire wild population consists of a few colonies restricted to about five side ridges on San Bruno Mountain, all within a band less than 3/4 mile long. It is a unique and beautiful manzanita, and also a rare and endangered one.
