  • date of photo  Mar 26, 2006
  • location   San Bruno Mountain (San Mateo County, California, US)
  • family Ericaceae
  • notes   Habit shot of A. imbricata. This species is a low, sprawling, shrub with tightly spaced, clasping leaves, arranged in a highly regular spiral pattern. The plants typically grow in large, crowded colonies of many individuals which hug rocky slopes, dominating tens to hundreds of square feet and excluding most other plants, save relatively small herbs which can grow up through its dense stems and leaves. The colony shown in this image is among the smallest I have seen...most would not fit in a single image frame. Nevertheless, this species is a very narrowly distributed endemic...the entire wild population consists of a few colonies restricted to about four side ridges on San Bruno Mountain, all within a band less than 3/4 mile long. It is a unique and beautiful manzanita, and also a rare and endangered one. Also visible in this photo (on the upper edge of the ridge) is the sole known colony of the very rare Arctostaphylos X pacifica, thought to be a hybrid between A. uva-ursi and A. glandulosa. The small bright yellow flowers at lower left and in between the A. imbricata and A. X pacifica are Goldfields (Lasthenia californica).
