habitat Seasonally inundated opening in maritime chaparral.notes I'm actually not certain whether this is Taricha torosa or T. granulosa. The Field Guides say both occur in this area but that T. torosa has a 'light-colored lower eyelid', while T. granulosa has a 'dark-colored lower eyelid'. This individuals lower eyelid appeared 'light' to me. But in reviewing the many Calphotos postings of both T. torosa and T. granulosa, this 'light/dark lower eyelid' distinction didn't seem very pronounced or consistent...so I'm not sure. Unfortunately, I didn't see this individual strike its 'defensive pose', or else I could have looked at whether it held its tail straight (T. torosa) or curled at the tip (T. granulosa). So my best guess is T. torosa torosa (from eyelid and location). If an expert can tell me otherwise, I'll be glad to know (and change the posted name).camera Shot on a Canon Digital Rebel XT at f11, 1/80, ISO 200, with a Canon 100mm macro lens.
