INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Feb 8, 2006
  • location   Betampona Strict Nature Reserve, Befosa Valley (Madagascar)
  • family Mantellidae
  • order Anura
  • class Amphibia
  • notes   This specimen (and population?) appears quite peculiar in having a colouration of the back quite similar to that of Mantella pulchra. In particular, the thighs are brownish, and the cephalic lines appear not so contrasted as in M. baroni (at least from the typical localities). Anyhow, the belly is very similar in colouration to that of the typical M. baroni, with separated blue spots and without the horse-shoe shaped spot on the throat (typical feature of M. pulchra). Since anyhow M. pulchra does occur in the same habitat we cannot exlude that the depicted specimen is indeed a hybrid between these species.
