notes A number of characters of Phacelia purpusii are visible in this image. E.g. from Munz' description in 'A California Flora': 'corolla lavender to violet, open-campanulate...the tube with thin translucent areas behind the stamens; scales oblong, the free margins of adjacent pairs connivent; stamens...with papillate filaments'. Also, looking at the portion of the the bud poking out behind (and above right of) the corolla you can see the unequal calyx lobes---some are narrowly oblanceolate, others are more widely spatulate/obovate. (It's the widths, not the lengths, that are unequal...this distinction may not be completely clear from the Jepson Manual description.) If you are not familiar with the 'corolla scales' character of phacelias, here's the description from Munz' genus summary for Phacelia: 'Corolla-scales attached in pairs to the corolla-tube at base of each filament amd more or less adnate to tube, sometimes absent.' The Jepson Manual refers to the corolla scales in two places. First in the family summary for Hydrophyllaceae: 'appendages in pairs on (corolla) tube between filaments or 0' and 'filament base sometimes appendaged'. And also in the genus summary for Phacelia: '(corolla) tube base with scales free or fused to filaments'.camera Shot on a Canon Digital Rebel XT at f20, 2.5 sec, ISO 100, with a Canon 100mm macro lens.
