location
Near the Observation Deck in Henry Cowell State Park, Felton. (Santa Cruz County, California, US)family
Polygonaceae
notes The perianth limb was white, but the throat was pale yellow (not visible without removing the perianth from the involucre...with the help of tweezers under a dissecting microscope!). Also, the outside of the perianth was glabrous. (The very similar and easily confused C. pungens can be distinguished by sparse hairs on the outside of the perianth, especially near the bases of the lobes. Also, while the involucre membranes and perianth of C. diffusa are always white, C. pungens often has pink involucre membranes and perianth, and no yellow throat.)camera Shot on a Canon Digital Rebel XT at f11, 1 sec, ISO 100 with a Canon 100mm macro lens.
photo category: Plant - annual/perennial
