INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Mar 26, 2005
  • location   Near Amboy Crater (San Bernardino County, California, US)
  • family Campanulaceae
  • plant community   Sandy Desert Flat
  • notes   One of the most intriguing aspects of Nemacladus species are the 'small stipelike appendages, each of which bears one or more terminal transparent rodlike cells', as described by Phillip Munz. In this species the 'stipelike appendages' are yellow, and the transparent rods are reflexed from the vertical by an angle of around 135 degrees. I'm very curious as to what function these 'appendages' serve.
