plant community In coarse sand and rocky soil in openings of chaparral.notes Habit shot of Systenotheca vortriedei from an oblique angle. The whole plant is roughly 10 cm across. This is a rare endemic of the Santa Lucia Mountains in Monterey and San Luis Obispo counties. The genus Systenotheca consists of this single species (previously lumped into Chorizanthe). It's a fascinating plant. Each involucre consists of two flowers: the lower, longer (fully opened) flower is pistillate; the upper, shorter flower is bisexual.
