  • notes   This small shrub has a delightfully unique (but tiny) flower which is a joy to study with a hand lens. The 'parachute-like' corolla is composed of 5 very thinly clawed petals whose flared triangular limbs are fused at the top. Each petal has a small thin red appendage on top. Two anthers are tucked under each of the fused petals atop a fused filament tube which also appears to be fused to the connate petal tips. It is easier to find this plant by looking for its bright red fruit. The fruit is shallowly lobed, scabrous in texture, and more conspicuous than the tiny delicate flowers.
