date of photo Nov 29, 2003
location
Rainmaker Project, Fila Chonta, NW of Quepos (Costa Rica)family
Bufonidae
order
Anura
class Amphibia
notes This once commonly known species, was last seen in 1996 (BolaƱos com pers), and was thought to be extinct. A new population was found in the Rainmaker Project, in 2003. This last population could give scientist a chance to study why this population persist, while it declined all over Costa Rica. It could shed more light on the amphibian decline phenomenon. Also captive breeding efforts could secure it from extinction, and potentially be the start for a reintroducton program. I would like to thank the people at Rainmaker, specially Ernesto Gutierrez, for giving me the opportunity to see my first Costa Rican Atelopus.photo category: Animal - Amphibian
