INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Jan 25, 2004
  • location   About 200' southwest of ''George's Picnic Area'' along ''Buggy Trail'' in Forest of Nisene Marks State Park. (Santa Cruz County, California, US)
  • family Liliaceae
  • plant community   Habitat: Cool moist duff under coast redwoods, bigleaf maples.
  • notes   Seven flowers and one bud. The flower perianths consist of three (relatively wide) reflexed whitish sepals with purplish-brown longitudinal striations and three very thin erect petals which are white at the bottom and dark purplish-brown towards the tips. (As usual, sepals are outermost, followed as you move inward by petals, stamens, and pistil:-) The pistils (at center of flowers) are topped by three horizontally spreading to reflexed stigma lobes. The flowers have a peculiar odor which presumably attracts its pollinators and gives rise to one of the common names for the plant: Fetid Adder's Tongue. (Adder's Tongue referring to shape of the three long thin ascending petals?). Some people find the smell quite unpleasant, but it's not so bad to me...the best description I can give is that it smells like wet dog fur :-). For other interesting information about this plant (e.g. ant and slug dispersal of seeds) and detailed references see the website: http://www.blm.gov/or/plans/surveyandmanage/SP/VascularPlants/scoliopusbigelovii.htm.
