plant community Habitat: Cool moist duff under coast redwoods, bigleaf maples.notes Habit shot showing one clump of three plants with two flowers and two developing fruits (at upper left & right corners of image). Each plant typically has two leaves. Deer are said to eat this plant. I saw many clumps chomped off at the base. As the plants grow the mottled, sheathing leaves will become larger and spread outward–eventually lying nearly flat against the ground. Also, the pedicels will lengthen considerably– drooping and twisting to the ground where the anchor-like fruits will nestle into the duff. (Thus the common name Slinkpod?) The flowers have a peculiar odor which presumably attracts its pollinators and gives rise to another common name for the plant, Fetid Adder's Tongue. (Adder's Tongue referring to shape of the three long thin ascending petals?). Some people find the smell quite unpleasant, but it's not so bad to me...the best description I can give is that it smells like wet dog fur :-).
