INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  May 17, 2003
  • location   Eureka Dunes (Inyo County, California, US)
  • family Euphorbiaceae
  • synonyms Chamaesyce ocellata ssp. arenicola
  • plant community   Sand Dunes
  • notes   This plant features a remarkable and unusual floral structure associated with the genus Chamaesyce and many other members of the family Euphorbiaceae. What appear to be 'flowers' in this photo are actually cyathia, an inflorescence type consisting of a cup (or involucre), rimmed here with four petal-like 'glands', and supporting separate male and female flowers. I've labeled the floral parts in the photo here with various letters. I hope this will clarify characters and descriptions encountered when keying Chamaesyce and other Euphorbiaceae.

    A. Involucre of the cyathium. B. Glands ('petal-like', but not really petals!). They secrete nectar which attracts pollinators (often flies). C. A male flower (each of which consists of a single stamen here!). D. Stalk of the female flower. E. Enlarged three-lobed ovary of maturing female flower, which is pendant in the gap between two of the four glands. F. Young styles atop female flower just beginning to emerge from an opening cyathium bud. The styles of the other cyathia are hidden in this shot, since their ovaries are hanging upside down. G. Stipules (useful in keying/identification).
