INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Aug 25, 2002
  • location   Mt. Lassen (Shasta County, California, US)
  • family Pinaceae
  • notes   Whitebark pine cones do not usually fall off of the tree whole,as do other pine cones. They shed their seeds, and then dissintegrate. Once in awhile you will find part of a cone that a squirrel has chewed off of the limb. The cones and sap are very pleasantly fragrant. I had to climb up this tree to get the cone shot.
