notes This photo is of A. magnifica with green immature cones. The cones turn a darker grayish color, then turn light brown as they open and shed their seeds and eventually, scales.I can often tell if a Red Fir is of the shastensis var. by combing the ground for cone scales that are from the most recent cone crop, and checking the bracts to see if they extend beyond the cone scale lip if I can't get a good look at cones on the tree. (I try to carry my 10x30x zoom binoculars on every field trip)camera Fuji FinePix 2800
