  • date of photo  Mar 23, 2002
  • location   Round Mountain (Shasta County, California, US)
  • family Cupressaceae
  • synonyms Cupressus macnabiana
  • notes   The Fountain Fire destroyed thousands of acres of forest and many homes several years ago. When I finally got the exact locations of the three groves of MacNab Cypress in this area I was very concerned that the fire may have burned all the old growth 'MacNabs', as all three locations were extremely burned over. This photo was taken behind the Round Mountain Post Office where a small grove was located between the actual 'Round Mountain Grove', and the Montgomery Creek Grove. Here, it seems that all the large trees were burned, but there are hundreds of 2 to 8 ft. tall sapplings in the area. These trees are the most fragrant MacNabs I've studied. MacNab Cypress is a fire regenerative conifer like Pinus attenuata(Knobcone Pine).
