notes Slo.: poletni luk - Syn.: Porrum ampeloprasum (L.) Mill., Allium porrum subsp. euampeloprasum Breistr., Allium porrum var. ampeloprasum (L.) Mirb. and about 45 heterotypic synonym names. - Habitat: Roadside, disturbed ground; flat terrain, calcareous, dry, stony ground; mostly sunny place; elevation 17 m (55 feet); average precipitations 1.000-1.500 mm/year, average temperature 12 - 14 deg C, Sub-Mediterranean phytogeographical region. Substratum: sandy soil. Comment of Flick album Allium ampeloprasum): Allium ampeloprasum is a Mediterranean floral element relatively rarely found in Slovenia, but it is much more common along the eastern shores of the Adriatic Sea in Croatia. It is more or less restricted to the warmest parts of the countries near the Adriatic Sea. Its beautiful round inflorescences may be up to 9 cm in diameter and contain up to 500 flowers. The cultivated leek is believed to be derived from this species. Genus Allium members' determination to species level is not always simple because specific traits of leaves, flowers, and bulbs are important. Unfortunately, the leaves are already weathered away when the plants bloom with most species. It is hard to find specimens with leaves and flowers in good shape simultaneously. Consequently, most of the traditional dichotomous keys are hard to use. The best keys (like Ref.: 5) provide two keys, one based on leaves-only properties and another on flower properties. Allium ampeloprasum can be identified by its relatively wide leaves compared to similar species, rough outer veins on its petals (refer to Fig. 21b), almost spherical bulb, and numerous small secondary bulbs attached at the bottom. Additionally, it is typically found in disturbed, sandy habitats. Ref.: (1) A.
