  • notes   Slo.: no name - syn.: Lupinus hirsutus (nom. ambig.), 'Lupinus varius' auct., Lupinus gussoneanus J.Agardh, Lupinus hirsutus subsp. micranthus (Boiss.) Arcang, Lupinus stolonifer L. - Habitat: Adriatic Sea shore, garrigue, calcareous, skeletal ground; flat terrain, open, sunny place, almost flat terrain; average precipitations ~ 1.000 mm/year, average temperature 13-14 deg C, Sub-Mediterranean phytogeographical region. - Substratum: soil. - Comments (pertain to Flickr album Lupinus micranthus): Lupinus-micranthus is a beautiful, Mediterranean plant (Ref.2), which hasn't been found yet in Slovenia in spite of a short Adriatic Sea shore the country has. Slovenian plant check list (Ref.1) lists only two species of this genus, both being only escapes from gardens. Namely, plants of Lupinus genus are broadly used in horticulture. Countless forms and colors have been cultivated by gardeners. Some of species are also planted and used for food, yet Lupinus micranthus is poisonous. It is not a common plant in the wild. In Croatia it grows almost exclusively on Adriatic islands (Ref. 3) with an exception of the most south tip of the Istria peninsula. - In the genus there are more than 200 species described. They grow in both Earth hemispheres with the main centers of diversity in North and South America. In Sierra Nevada in the Paradise Valley, Kings' Canyon National Park I've seen the most beautiful display of these plants. Thousands of blue-violet Sierra Lupine (Lupinus grayi) in dense stands covered the ground as far as the eye could reach. - Ref.: (1) A.
