Lower Trenta valley between villages Soča and Trenta, right bank of river Soča, north of abandoned farm house Strgulc, Soča 47, East Julian Alps (Posočje, Slovenia)notes Slo.: brinolistni kapičar - Habitat: former pasture; calcareous, skeletal, colluvial ground; base rich, shallow rendsina; open, sunny, dry, and warm place; moderately inclined mountain slope, south aspect; average precipitations ~ 3.000 mm/year, average temperature 7-9 deg C, elevation 635 m (2.080 feet) and 560 m (1.840 feet), alpine phytogeographical region. - Substratum: soil. - Comment (pertains to pictures in the Flickr album Polytrichum juniperinum): Polytrichum juniperinum is a common and showy, acrocarpous, medium sized moss of mostly dry places. It is present on all continents on the Earth from lowland to high mountains. It is a dioecious plant, meaning that the male and female gametophytes are on separate plants. It can be distinguished from other species of this genus by distinctive, long red-brown tips of the leaves. The leaf edges are entire without teeth. Otherwise quite similar and also common bristly haircup (Polytrichum pilifrum) also has similar long tips of the leaves, but they are white instead of red-brown. Also, Polytrichum juniperinum's male plants (see Fig. 5.) are typical with their reddish modified leaves, the perigonial rosettes, forming small terminal 'flowers'. When dry the moss looks much different (see Fig. 10.). The leaves become enrolled and adpressed to the stem. The shots become pointed. - Ref.: (1) M. Luth, Mosses of Europe – A Photographic Flora.
