  • date of photo  Jan 3, 2022

  • location   Lower Trenta valley, between villages Soča and Trenta, left bank of river Soča, somewhat upstream of Matevž's footbridge, East Julian Alps (Posočje, Slovenia)
  • notes   Habitat: River shore, a few meters from the water stream; humid, relatively cold and open place, however with little sun due to steep mountains around; average precipitations ~ 3.000 mm/year, average temperature 5-7 deg C, elevations 530 m (1.740 feet), Alpine phytogeographical region. - Substratum: dead branch of (most probably) willow (Salix eleagnos) laying on ground. - Comments (pertain to pictures in Flicker album Frullania dilatata): Frullania dilatata is a common liverwort. It can be found on bark of several kinds of trees, Fraxinus excelsior being its favorite. Sometimes it grows also on rocks according to literature. However, I've never found it on rocks in Trenta valley. The habit of Frullania species is so typical that it is hard to misidentify them for another genus. Within the genus the identification on species level is more demanding. However, Frullania dilatata has the largest and the widest helmet-shaped lobules of all European Frullania species (length/width ratio about 1:1 or slightly longer). It also lacks ocelli (dark, modified cells in their leaves). It can be recognized easily even from a distance when it forms characteristic large, dark, round patches on the bark of trees. So, the identification is not difficult. However, note that, when it is completely dry, it looks much different than the pictures presented. - Ref.: (1) Smith A.J.E., The Liverworts of Britain & Ireland, Cambridge University Press (1991), p 257.
