plant community Shale barrensnotes A population of Camissonia benitensis that grows on shale barrens rather than the typical serpentine geologic transition zone or serpentine alluvial stream terrace habitat. Other typical 'strict' serpentine endemics including Quercus durata and Layia discoidea also grow on shale in this area (a zone of edaphic infidelity). The soil has been chemically analyzed and has a Ca:Mg molar ratio ~ 3.0 (a 'normal' ratio and much more Ca than typically found in serpentine soil). Most serpentine soils are in the range of Ca:Mg molar 0.5 (very calcium deficient). The typical serpentine endemics may be growing in this area since the soils mimic serpentine soils in other key chemical aspects such as macronutrient deficiency (N,P,K).keywords: Camissonia benitensis, shale, barren
photo category: Plant - annual/perennial
