notes This shrub was about 3 feet tall. Its twigs were rather densely-matted and tightly-hugging the shaded north-facing side of a crevice between granite boulders above the edge of a wash. The densely matted twigs and the somewhat thicker & waxier leaves of this plant seemed remarkably different from the more open & sprawling habitus and thinner leaves of the smaller plants of this species that I'd seen years ago in the Borrego Palm Canyon area. Perhaps this is a much older plant than those others? Or perhaps it's just 'variation' (accentuated by localized environmental factors?). At first, gazing at it from afar or up close, all I could see were leaves & twigs. But gently lifting and separating some outer layers to peer underneath, I noticed there were actually many fruits and flowers hidden under its dense outer canopy of leaves...some are shown in the accompanying images of this series. photo category: Plant - shrub
