INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Feb 14, 2015
  • location   Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve (Contra Costa County, California, US)
  • family Montiaceae
  • notes   This was a remarkably large and dense stand of 'Red Maids', on a south-facing slope.

Note: For many years this was referred to as Calandrinia ciliata, and placed within the family Portulacaceae (there may still be CalPhotos posts under Calandrinia ciliata). It is currently placed in the family Montiaceae and the epithet has been changed to menziesii...based on molecular studies presented in Hershkovitz(2006). See the last two sentences of the Jepson eFlora description...with further details here.
