habitat dung pats in semi-stabilized sand dunesspecies associated with this habitat: Sulcophaneus menelas Hyalis argentea Sporobolus rigens Eucranium species Myloxena species Pseudocleobis species Montagnea arenaria notes The animal was captured in a tunnel dug below a cow pat in the hard pan, sandy soil between mobile dunes. This picture shows the relatively large mites that were on the underside of the beetle. I think that they are not parasitizing the adult beetle, but using her to move into the burrow where she will make a ball of dung and lay her egg. If true, then this is an example of phoresy, i.e., using another animal as a means of transport between habitats.keywords: Sulcophaneus menelas, Acarina mites, phoresy
